A place to buy, sell, and get inspired for your event.

It all starts with an idea, and the one behind Sellebrate is top-tier. Founder Deby Aho brought us her vision, an eco-friendly marketplace to buy and sell event-related items, with momentum already behind it. There was just one problem: she didn’t have the budget to develop the entire app.

That’s when we proposed the Infinite Red Startup Package. The Infinite Red Startup Package exists to cut through the Gordian knot of a great idea lacking capital. We use a simple process to go from idea to MVP in short order. With a little sprint planning and some real-world experience, Deby saw a mockup of her app in just six weeks!

Defining an MVP

With Deby and Sellebrate, we started where we always start, in "blue sky planning". Here we explore the possibilities without any limits. Then we bring the limits back: after all, no app can be expected to do it all, and a brand without focus is hard for folks to connect with.

We worked with Deby to determine her target audience and brand positioning, then used that to determine what the essentials were for her app in the context of launching on time and on budget. Our goal: a manageable, high-quality baseline app to present to the market audience.

The Objective

Understanding the audience

We often hear founders questioning their concept. Will people like the idea? Is this something that’s needed? We try to answer these questions as quickly as possible. Sellebrate is one of the few apps we’ve worked on where the answers became obvious right away. In the first week of the project, surveys were sent out to potential users. The feedback came back overwhelmingly positive. Not only had Deby identified a gap in the market: people were already actively looking for this kind of sustainable marketplace.

We didn’t stop there! We believe user testing is essential throughout the development process. Without it, we’re all guessing at how the app should work, and one wrong guess could be costly later. That’s why Sellebrate’s sprint was focused on designing, iterating, and then course-correcting along the way. The experience had to be natural for our users so they would keep coming back and integrating the app into their daily habits.

Visual & Interface Design

Designing a unique experience

Great design is a foundation upon which a business can grow and thrive. The app we designed for Deby was created with the intent of acquiring more users, adapting to demand, and fostering rapport within the marketplace community. That’s why our team is so discerning when creating styles and layouts for an MVP. To us, design isn’t just a fancy thumbnail—design is putting together the building blocks of a new business.

Our team creates styles aligned with the brand using a tool called InVision. We stitch together designs in a flow, as if it were a real, live app. Deby was able to hold the Sellebrate concept in her hands, interact with it, and see which ideas worked and which didn’t. No coding required!

To understand how essential design is to every aspect of an app, consider Sellebrate’s buying process. Since the app is a marketplace, a paramount requirement for the design was user safety. Every customer should feel safe buying, selling, and exchanging items. Iterating on this core belief, we came to the idea of a “virtual handshake.” A buyer is able to scan a QR code on the seller’s phone when they collect the item in person, completing the exchange. It’s an integral feature within the app that creates a great experience for Sellebrate’s customers.

“The client wanted a UI that would stand out from other marketplace apps and have a unique look and feel. We were able to give her three unique options and choose preferred elements from each to decide on a final UI direction.”

Under the hood

To build Sellebrate, we decided to use Ignite Expo, an open-source platform for making universal native apps, because it handles a lot of the tasks that eat up time outside of writing code (app signing, releases, etc.). This freed us to focus on writing essential code, helping us maximize Deby’s budget.

We decided to use Stripe to handle payments. Stripe manages credit and debit accounts for customers purchasing items, as well as handling bank accounts for sellers to receive payments and payouts.

Through that complication arose inspiration! We ended up building a web portal using Vercel’s Next.js to manage Stripe, and made the portal accessible through the app for a more native and cohesive feel. This means all financial data is handled on a secure web server. The only financial information the app ever receives are secure Stripe tokens and non-confidential details (names, last four digits of the accounts’ numbers) so we can display that information when needed.

“The team at Infinite Red brought me from an idea, to reality. They worked with me and added a unique perspective to my project and created something beyond what I had imagined. They took the time to listen to what I needed and quickly made it something beautiful and cohesive! My experience with this design team was unparalleled!”

The Outcome

Everyone loves a project launch, to realize that the weeks of hard work have paid off as we see a dream made tangible. Deby Aho and the team at Infinite Red launched Sellebrate on August 3rd, 2020. By September we had thousands of downloads and counting. Sellebrate is already making waves as an innovator in sustainable event planning, and we’re proud to see it active and appreciated!
