Rewriting an app with a near perfect App Store rating

With over 1.8 million reviews averaging a 4.8 star rating, Mercari's team knew it was essential that a shift to React Native didn't get in the way of that near perfect rating.

Experiencing unprecedented growth, rewriting their apps from the ground up was a tough call for Mercari's team—one that had too many upsides to ignore.

As Naoya Makino writes in his post, "We believe that by fully adopting React Native, we will be on the most efficient and effective path to building the Mercari app that meets our customers’ needs — now and in the future."

What they needed next was a team of React Native experts who could guide them in unifying their codebase.

That’s when Mercari came to Infinite Red.

Unifying Mercari’s apps into a single codebase with React Native

Mercari knew that having two apps written in their own native code would lead to inconsistencies and doubled efforts for their team. Working with our Senior React Native Engineers, we were able to seamlessly transition both their Android and iOS apps into one single codebase—making it easier for their team to maintain. Mercari’s development team can now respond faster to user needs and market trends so they are leaders in the space.

Accessibility was also key on Mercari’s project. One code base not only made it more consistent for their brand, it made it easier for our team to launch better accessibility features. Accessibility was prioritized from the start, ensuring that all components of the app were compliant with the latest standards.

By switching to React Native, Mercari was able to unify their two native engineering teams into a single React Native team and consolidated a lot of duplicated effort. It's by far the largest React Native app I’ve worked on.

“Infinite Red played a vital role in developing our React Native app from the ground up... We would not have successfully transitioned to React Native without their contribution. I highly recommend them for any React Native development.”

A seamless shift to React Native

With thousands of users, Mercari knew that launching was important to get right. Working with Infinite Red, our team was able to work with theirs on a launch that was seamless.

The unified React Native app not only upheld Mercari's status as a premier shopping destination but also made it easier for users everywhere to buy and sell items.

Rated 4.8 stars by over 1.7 million users, Mercari is one of the biggest apps out there that we helped move to React Native.

In fact, it went so well that Naoya even published a reflection on how Mercari’s transition to React Native went with our team leading the way.
