Bringing React Native to one of the top apps on the store

If you happen to own a car, chances are good you’ve heard of the GasBuddy app.

Consistently among the most downloaded in the App Store with an average 4.5 star rating, Gas Buddy helps its community of more than 1.4 million users save on fuel every day. Using the power of crowdsourcing, users report gas prices – sharing with anyone nearby to search and compare gas prices. GasBuddy is easy, intuitive, and helpful to hundreds of thousands of daily active users. It’s exactly the kind of app we love working on at Infinite Red.

Having been ten years since the last overhaul, the engineering team at GasBuddy was more than ready to embark on a complete rewrite of the app – this time leveraging the power of React Native. That’s what led them to Infinite Red.

"There is no substitute for experience in getting the “idiom” of React Native and avoiding the numerous dark alleys around state management, performance tuning and third party module selection. Our team at Infinite Red... has provided this throughout our project."

Mitigating risk with experience

GasBuddy knew that rewriting an app with so many daily users would be a big risk. They came to us looking for a partner that would treat their project with care; a partner who would help them seamlessly transition all of their users over to the rewritten app. In essence: they were looking for React Native’s top experts to help them rearchitect their app.

From day one, our team made it a priority to bring our years of React Native expertise to GasBuddy's talented mobile development team. Our senior React Native engineers would work with their team on a daily basis to prioritize, implement, and test the new app. We even completely optimized the app for performance – ensuring that users would still have that polished experience they had come to expect.

GasBuddy's CTO, Max Metral, even writes even more about what it was like on this project in two of his recent blog posts. He starts off by explaining how they came to their decision to rewrite the app in React Native before posting a follow-up about shipping the new GasBuddy app.

GasBuddy has been one of most rewarding efforts and we're excited to see what's next.
